Energy drinks are usually advertised to provide a quick boost to the energy levels and quite popular among teenagers, young adults and even children. It is important to note that excessive intake of energy drinks can lead to certain side effects such as frequent urination which might also have other underlying causes. With this in mind, it is recommended not to drink large amounts of energy drinks.
What are the possible causes?
An apparent cause of frequent urination is simply drinking large amounts of fluid. The more fluid taken in, the more urine is produced. Consuming large amounts of energy drinks or any fluid can result to a frequent urination. Another common cause of frequent urination is urinary tract infection which must be ruled out if the symptoms persist even after the individual stops drinking the beverage.
Most energy drinks contain large amounts of fructose and other sugars. A 16-oz can contains up to 62 grams of sugar or almost 16 teaspoons. If an individual has diabetes, this can quickly increase the blood glucose to abnormally high levels. Since frequent urination and excessive thirst are the indicative symptoms of high blood sugar, proper action must be taken by monitoring the blood sugar level if diabetic or consulting a doctor about the symptoms.
Frequent urination can also be linked to the caffeine content in energy drinks. Remember that caffeine is considered as a mild diuretic that can result to frequent urination, especially when taken in large amounts. Even though many energy drinks claim to contain less caffeine than a cup of coffee, they might contain added ingredients that can increase the caffeine level even higher.
The additional ingredients in energy drinks might include kola nut, guarana, yerba mate or cocoa. These substances contain naturally-occurring caffeine that might not be listed among the ingredients but can contribute to increased levels. In a study conducted, it was discovered that every gram of guarana contains 40-80 mg of caffeine. Even though the maximum amount of caffeine in soda should not be more than 71 grams per 12 ounces, there are no limitations on energy drinks since the manufacturers classify them as natural dietary supplements. What are the effects?
Aside from being a nuisance, frequent urination seems to lead to serious complications such as dehydration. This is unlikely to occur since drinking the beverages can provide additional liquid.
