Elbow tendonitis

Elbow tendonitis is a painful condition that is caused by the swelling of the tendons that connect the lower arm muscles to the bone. This condition is also called as tennis elbow or golf elbow. Any repetitive movement of the band of tendons can eventually lead to elbow tendonitis. Even though overusing the tendons can cause inflammation and pain, the age of the individual can also increase the risk since tendons lose their elasticity as one starts to age.

Symptoms of elbow tendonitis

It is important to watch out for the symptoms of elbow tendonitis especially among individuals who engage in repetitive activities or sports.

  • Pain and inflammation in the elbow area
  • Stiffness

Elbow tendonitis can be easily treated at home with basic first aid skills that you can learn in any first aid course.  The treatment aims to promote the healing process in the affected area.

Different treatment methods for elbow tendonitis

Overusing the tendons can cause inflammation and pain, the age of the individual can also increase the risk since tendons lose their elasticity as one starts to age.

If you suspect that an individual has elbow tendonitis, there are several treatment options that you can perform to help alleviate the pain and inflammation.

Rest

In this condition, it is important to rest the affected part. Avoid any activity that caused elbow tendonitis. In case it is a sport, you can try a different one for exercise. If the individual plays tennis, he/she can try on cycling or swimming while allowing the affected area to heal.

Application of ice

As a first aid measure, you can apply an ice pack on the affected elbow and lower arm area. In this mode of treatment, it will help relieve both the swelling and pain due to the inflammation in the tendons. The ice or cold compress should be applied for at least 20 minutes at 3 times in a day. It is recommended to use an ice pack up to 6 times in day, but is not always practical especially for those who work. If at work, the ice pack can be applied during breaks or in the evening once you reach home.

Arm brace or elbow brace

An arm or elbow brace can be used to provide added assistance to the affected tendon as it starts to heal. Make sure that the brace is placed below the elbow, below the forearm since this is where the muscles are connected.

Ant-inflammatory medications

You can administer over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin. These medications will not only help relieve the inflammation and heal the tendon, but will also provide relief from pain temporarily.

Stretching exercises

If tolerated by the individual, he/she must execute mild stretching exercises once getting up in the morning and before going to sleep at night. The individual must casually stretch the area of the arm that becomes stiff. Take note that these stretches must also be performed by the individual while at work during breaks. In case the individual experiences pain while performing these stretches, he/she must stop right away.

In case the individual continues to suffer from pain and inflammation due to the elbow tendonitis, it is best to consult a doctor to ensure that a proper diagnosis is given.

For individuals who are currently taking other medications or has an existing medical condition, it is important to consult a doctor before using over-the-counter medications for inflammation to ensure that there are no detrimental drug interactions that will take place.
