Front knee pain can drastically affect the ability of the individual to move around especially when ascending stairs. The front knee pain is usually linked to the patellofemoral joint in which the kneecap rests in anterior part of the thigh bone.

Tracking of the kneecap
The kneecap is embedded in the dense quadriceps tendons that connect to the lower leg bone. The patella slides along a groove in the thigh bone while bending and straightening the knee, thus adding tension to the tendon. Oftentimes, the kneecap moves out of this groove which is a sore condition called patellar tracking disorder. This condition can be due to weakness of the muscles on one side of the thigh muscles which causes the patella to be pulled downwards to the stronger side.
The body structure can also contribute to the front knee pain while climbing stairs. The angle of pull on the quadriceps tendon is affected by the alignment of the hips, lower leg bone and the thigh bone. Always bear in mind that this alignment is larger in women that can pull on the kneecap exteriorly that causes it to slide out of the groove while the knee is moved. Flattened arches in the feet can also cause the kneecap to track incorrectly. Over time, this results to pain while performing daily activities such as climbing stairs. Rest is beneficial for this condition.
Cartilage serves as padding between the surfaces of bones in healthy joints. If the individual has arthritis, there is breakdown of the joint surfaces that leads to pain during activity.
Chondromalacia patella develops as the cartilage below the patella wears away with symptoms that develop over time. Aching, dull pain can be present even at rest while activities can trigger sharp front knee pain. Always bear in mind that climbing stairs can aggravate the condition.
The front knee pain that manifests while climbing stairs might be due to the irritation of the patellar tendon. Overuse of the quadriceps muscles in the front of the thigh can result to tenderness of the tendon. These muscles are responsible for straightening the knee and prevent it from bending rapidly during high-impact activities.
Overuse of the patellar tendon is common among athletes. The constant strain on the tendon leads to inflammation that results to pain and even swelling in the front part of the knee. After some time, micro-tears can develop in the fibers of the tendon.
This condition typically affects growing children. It is quite common among athletes who engage in repetitive running and jumping. The patellar tendon starts to pull away from the bone due to the constant stress and a large-sized bump grows on the front part of the knee below the kneecap.
