Indigestion: Are greasy foods to blame?

Indigestion is an uncomfortable condition that occurs after a meal. It has similar symptoms with heartburn including a painful or burning sensation in the stomach. Indigestion can also make the individual feel uncomfortably full which can lead to nausea or bloating. Even though it does not necessarily indicate a serious condition, indigestion can be prevented by avoiding certain foods including the greasy ones.

Digestive process

Greasy foods add up to indigestion due to their high fat content. When fats are taken in, the stomach transmit signals to the brain to slow down the emptying of the stomach to prevent excess amount of fats from being released into the bloodstream at one time that can clog the circulatory system.

In case the individual might end up with unexplained weight loss or the symptoms progress to include intense abdominal pain, a doctor should be consulted.

In addition, fats in greasy foods are digested in a slow manner since they should be broken down into smaller particles before they can enter the small intestine where they are completely broken down. It simply means that fat might remain heavily on the stomach for some time which results to indigestion.

Types of greasy foods

Greasy foods do not necessarily mean oily foods but certain foods such as the following must be limited since they are difficult for the body to break down:

  • Hamburgers
  • Pizza
  • French fries
  • Popcorn
  • Fried chicken

If these foods are eaten, stick with small servings to allow the stomach enough time to break them down.

Management of indigestion

In case indigestion is due to greasy foods, medications are taken to promote stomach emptying. It simply means that the greasy food will move from the stomach to the intestines rapidly.

Antacids are initially used which reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. This is useful since greasy foods can stimulate the production of acid in the stomach.

Considerations

If indigestion could not be relieved by avoiding greasy foods, it is best to seek medical care. In case the individual might end up with unexplained weight loss or the symptoms progress to include intense abdominal pain, a doctor should be consulted.

The other symptoms that necessitate medical attention include chest, jaw or back pain, anxiety or extreme sweating.
