Iodine allergy

Iodine is a common element present in the human body. An adverse reaction to iodine is uncommon but can be deadly if one occurs.

The medical uses of chemical agents containing iodine is increased, particularly in radiocontrast agents utilized in X-rays. Due to this, adverse reactions to iodine occur if used in this manner.

What are the signs?

Being exposed to things that might include iodine can trigger the following among highly sensitive individuals:

  • Hives
  • Itchy rash that arises steadily (contact dermatitis)
  • Anaphylaxis

What are the causes?

Iodine allergy

Anaphylactic shock is considered as an emergency. It requires prompt medical care with a shot of epinephrine.

Some solutions and foods that contain iodine that can trigger an adverse reaction include:

  • Povidone-iodine – this is a solution utilized as a skin disinfectant in the medical setting but can trigger a rash in some sensitive individuals
  • Iodinated contrast dye – this is an X-ray radiocontrast agent utilized in intravascular injections. In case a reaction occurs, the individual is given systemic glucocorticosteroids before the iodinated contrast is given.
  • Foods that include iodine – this includes fish and dairy products

Management of iodine allergy

The doctor will perform a patch test if the individual is suspected to be allergic to povidone in povidone-iodine solution.

If diagnosed with an intolerance to substances that include iodine, a corticosteroid cream or oral variant might be prescribed by the doctor. These can help alleviate the symptoms such as an itchy rash. The individual is also instructed to avoid foods or other things that can trigger adverse reactions.

Anaphylactic shock is considered as an emergency. It requires prompt medical care with a shot of epinephrine.

What is the outlook?

Although iodine intolerance and adverse side effects to intravascular contrast dye that includes iodine are uncommon, a doctor should be consulted if testing is needed if the issue is suspected.

If diagnosed with an intolerance to certain forms of foods, a doctor must be seen to come up with a diet to avoid any reactions.
