Itchy eyes can cause discomfort. Certainly, ending up with itchy eyes is rarely an issue of concern.
Some of the usual causes include:
- Dry eyes
- Eye infections such as conjunctivitis
- Allergic rhinitis
- Eczema or atopic dermatitis
- Foreign object in the eye
- Incorrect fitting or material of the contact lens
In such instances, itchy eyes can be managed at home.
Home remedies for itchy eyes
There are remedies that can be used to manage itchy eyes. Consequently, a doctor must be seen if the symptoms are severe enough to disrupt with daily activities.
Over-the-counter eye drops are always beneficial in relieving the itchiness of the eyes, hence, the ideal types are those that are free from preservatives.
A cold compress helps relieve the itchy eyes and provides a soothing effect on the eyes. First of all, simply soak a clean towel or cloth in cold water, wring out the excess and apply over the closed eye. Finally, repeat the application as often as needed.
When to consult a doctor
In most cases of itchy eyes, it does not last for long and even settle on their own. See a doctor for the following:
- Sensation of something lodged in the eye
- Vision seems to worsen
- Eye infection develops
- Itchy eyes progress to moderate to severe eye pain
Discontinue any home treatment and consult a doctor if any of these are present.
