Management of a biceps cramp

It is a known fact that a cramp is described as sore muscle spasms that occur after an individual engages in strenuous exercise or sport. These cramps are not considered dangerous but can cause a lot of pain. Aside from abuse, muscle cramps can develop due to intake of diuretic medications, dehydration or an imbalance in minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. It is important to note that there are two sets of biceps in the body – biceps femoris in the leg and biceps brachii in the arm.

What you need to know about the biceps

The biceps femoris is part of the hamstrings in the rear part of the thigh. This starts on the ischium and inserts beneath the exterior of the knee. The muscle is responsible for bending the knee and extending the leg backwards.

The biceps brachii is located in the upper arm. Once this tightens, it bends the elbow. One head of the muscle is linked to the front part of the shoulder to facilitate movement of the arm across the chest. Take note that both biceps muscles can develop a biceps cramp.

Always bear in mind that stretching can help lengthen the muscle fibers in order to work against the muscle spasm.

Measures in managing a biceps cramp

Always bear in mind that stretching can help lengthen the muscle fibers in order to work against the muscle spasm. The individual can stretch the muscle either with stretching exercises or with long glide-like massage strokes. When it comes to the biceps muscles in the leg or arm, straightening the limb can stretch the muscle. The individual can indirectly stretch out a biceps cramp by contracting the opposite muscle.

When it comes to a cramp affecting the biceps femoris, the individual can tighten the quadriceps muscles and straighten out out the leg. As for a cramps affecting the biceps brachii, the triceps muscles must be tightened and straighten out the arm.

Massage can help manage a biceps cramp. A post-event massage is a group of massaging techniques that is used by therapists on athletes after engaging in an intense training or competition. Nevertheless, this is not just only for athletes since the same techniques can be used for any muscle cramp including a biceps cramp.

A massage cream or oil is used along with sliding or kneading techniques using light to moderate pressure. Take note that the gliding motion can help lengthen the affected muscle. The kneading helps break up the spasm while gentle compression helps break up the muscle as well.

Other measures for a biceps cramp

The individual must be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids after engaging in an intense activity in order to prevent dehydration. In case the individual develops a biceps cramp that does seem to subside, provide at least 8 oz. of water immediately. If the individual is sweating profusely, you have to provide vegetable juice or sports drink. For those who are suffering from frequent muscle cramps, it is best to consult a doctor in order to rule out an underlying medical issue.
