Blisters have been the biggest issue among those who engage in walking or running for extended periods. Even wearing new shoes can cause the development of blisters. Can blisters be prevented or survive a day with intact skin? Luckily, various ways can help toughen up the feet as well as prevent blisters from developing. It is best to take it slow and only go on short walks with the new pair of shoes, even if it is the same brand and model being used. Try to build up the mileage and speed with each pair of shoes being used.

Cramped shoes

If the shoes used by the individual have a cramped toe box, the toes will end up rubbing against the sides or end of the shoes. Understandably, this can result to darkened toenails or even losing the toenails after a long period of walking.

The solution is to choose walking shoes that have a finger’s thickness of length between the end of the toe and the end of the shoes. This will allow the feet to expand while walking for long periods. It is recommended to select shoes that have proper width for the foot so that the toes have enough space.

Feet sliding around in the shoes

If the shoes have a sloppy fit and the feet slides forward and backward inside the shoe with every step, this will only add further friction that will increase the risk for blister formation. In such cases, the individual must also end up with a black toenail.

If this is the issue, the individual should have enough room to expand while walking but not enough for it to slide around. It is recommended to wear a thicker sock to take up some of the extra space. In case there is still enough space, it is best to purchase shoes that fit better.

Rough edges

It is important to note that the edges and seams of the insole can brush against the foot or toes. The individual can change styles of shoes or insoles used. Take note that some shoes are specifically designed to be seamless inside. Generally, the solution is to lubricate or cover the area that is being rubbed. You can utilize petroleum jelly or other lubricants available in the market.
