Ruptured spleen

A ruptured spleen might occur after sustaining a direct strike to the left side of the back or stomach. This results to the tearing of the lining of the spleen and the tissues within.

The spleen is in the upper far left side of the abdomen. It has a variety of roles in the body. It filters out blood as part of the immune system. The spleen also helps in fighting certain types of bacteria responsible for meningitis and pneumonia.

Indications of a ruptured spleen

  • Pain and tenderness in the upper abdomen
  • Pain that is oftentimes referred to the left shoulder
  • Nausea

    Pain and tenderness in the upper abdomen is an indication of a ruptured spleen.

In case the bleeding is significant, the indications of shock rapidly develop which includes the following:

  • Blurry vision
  • Lightheadedness
  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness

What are the causes?

The spleen is positioned in the left side of the abdomen, beneath the diaphragm and under the ribs. The usual causes of a ruptured spleen include sports injuries, vehicular accidents as well as fights and assaults.


Remember that medical care must be sought right away since internal bleeding can be deadly.

  • The individual is placed under a drip to ensure that proper circulation to the bodily organs is maintained.
  • A blood transfusion is started to replace any lost blood.
  • In some cases, surgery is required to control the bleeding.
  • The whole spleen might be removed in some cases under a procedure called splenectomy.
  • In case there is only a small-sized tear, the doctor might be able to fix the tear.
  • If the spleen is taken out, it is vital that the individual is given a vaccination against pneumococcal infection since the spleen has a vital role in protecting the body against infection particularly from the pneumococcal bacteria.
