Seborrheic dermatitis involves skin inflammation. It can affect individuals of all ages but mostly affects men. Children rarely develop the condition. The exact cause for the skin condition is excessive colonization of the Malassezia furfur fungus which is found close to the sebaceous glands usually in the scalp, nose, face, forehead, chest, head and shoulders.
The condition is considered chronic and can progress in 2 forms – mild and severe. Luckily, there are several effective measures in managing seborrheic dermatitis.
What are the indications?
It is easy to pinpoint the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis and one of them is dandruff. The other indications include the following:
- Skin irritation and redness
- Appearance of white or yellow scales
- Acne or rashes
- Soreness of the affected skin
- Increased skin sensitivity
There is also a yellowish crust with reddened weeping skin below. If the individual scratches these lesions, there is a risk for infection that can worsen the condition.
Oftentimes, the symptoms might indicate other conditions such as psoriasis. Therefore, it is best to consult a doctor to determine the difference between psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.
What are the causes?
The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not determined yet. The possible factors include stress, genetic factors and a weakened immunity.
Almost all individuals have Malassezia furfur but only some suffer from seborrheic dermatitis since only a combination of various factors triggers the excessive growth of the fungus.
Potential risk factors include the following:
- Hereditary constituents of sebum
- Hormonal changes
The usual treatment includes medications required to normalize the nervous system and digestive tract. During treatment, it is also required to process the skin with a weakened solution of boric or salicylic acid.
If the face is affected, it requires a special approach. The treatment involves ketoconazole that slows down and even stop the growth of the fungus. Apply the remedy on the skin and wash off after 3 minutes.
In case seborrheic dermatitis develops on the chest and back, it is treated using a special soap, antifungal drugs and immunomodulators.
