What are the causes of abdominal bloating?

Abdominal bloating is a sensation of fullness or enlargement of the abdomen. It is often brought about by disturbance in the normal functioning of the GI tract which results to an increase in the intestinal gas.

The gas in the intestine is a combination of various components that can be intensified by swallowing too much air, impaired absorption due to obstruction or excess production. The excess gas results to bloating along with other symptoms such as burping or flatulence.

Possible causes of abdominal bloating

Abdominal bloating might be an indication of various conditions. Most of these conditions are not serious and often result from changes in the functionality of the GI tract.

Abdominal bloating

Irritable bowel syndrome is a prevalent condition in which there are alternating episodes of constipation and diarrhea.

The body takes time to break down and eliminate fat from the body. Excess fat in the diet can trigger episodes of abdominal bloating. Foods that can cause bloating due to the formation of excess gas include cauliflower, cabbage, salads and baked beans.

Swallowing air

If large amounts of air are swallowed, the bowel has a hard time absorbing or eliminating it from the body rapidly. This simply means that more remain inside the bowel lumen and causes the sensation of a full bowel.

Nervousness, anxiety, gulping beverage or food, eating rapidly, drinking using straws and chewing on gum can cause one to swallow more air.

Malabsorption syndrome

Various conditions might be present in which the body could not break down and absorb certain components of food. In such instances, the leftover food products generate surplus gas due to chemical reactions or due to the presence of good bacteria in the bowel which strains hard to break down these foods.

Partial bowel obstruction

An obstruction at some region in the intestines can impair the mechanical passage of food and even result to abdominal bloating.

Constipation is described as diminished frequency of bowel movements that might lead to bloating.

Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is a prevalent condition in which there are alternating episodes of constipation and diarrhea. Remember that abdominal bloating is one of the distinctive features of this condition.

Abdominal bloating is prevalent among women during the menstruation period or as part of premenstrual stress disorder.
