The joint pain triggered by certain foods usually originates from gout. The condition is triggered by elevated levels of uric acid in the body which eventually crystallize and leave behind deposits in the tissues and joints. Foods that are rich in purines which are chemical compounds that form uric acid when they are broken down can lead to excess uric acid in the body which will worsen the joint pain triggered by gout.
The individual who has gout should avoid eating organ meats such as the kidney, heart, brain, liver and testicle which are very rich in purines and can result to an elevated level of uric acid in the body. Other non-traditional meats such as the tongue also contain elevated level of purines as well as meat extracts, mincemeats, bouillons and broths. Even game meats such as a duck, partridge, goose, turkey and pheasant are also considered as high-purine foods. Additionally, pork, beef and lamb also contain moderate amount of purines.
There are various species of fish and shellfish that contain high levels of purines and can cause or worsen the gout-related joint pain. These include mackerel, herring, sardines, anchovies and mussels. Even fish eggs are also considered as high-purine foods.
Grain and grain products
There are various grains and products containing grain that contain either moderate or high levels of purines. Beer is particularly rich in purines as well as wine and hard liquor. The yeast that is utilized in the brewing process of alcohol and in baking products is also high in purines. Certain breads, whole grain cereals, wheat bran and oatmeal also contain moderate level of purines. Additionally, some of these foods are highly beneficial, thus it is best to consult a doctor first if the individual has gout whether these foods must be avoided.
Legumes and vegetables
Various animal products are not the only foods that are rich in purines. Certain foods that are considered rich in purines include spinach, peas, cauliflower, asparagus, lentils, beans and mushrooms. These foods are likely to cause joint pain. If an individual has gout, these must be avoided or consult a doctor first. Take note that these legumes and vegetables are good sources of minerals and vitamins and can be eaten in moderation if the individual is not suffering from gout.
