What are the indications of a head injury after a fall?

It is a known fact that head injuries can be scary. This is due to the fact that the brain is situated within the skull. The brain is a delicate component that controls the motor functions, intellectual skills and many more. With this in mind, it is vital to recognize any signs and symptoms of a head injury sustained after a fall so that first aid care and medical attention can be provided to the individual. If not treated right away, the damage can worsen and can be deadly.

Headaches

One of the common symptoms of a head injury right after an individual sustained a fall is a headache. A minor headache does not necessarily indicate that there is something wrong but if it gradually worsens or starts out as a very painful one, it can indicate a serious injury to the head.

In some cases, individuals have died since they were not able to seek immediate medical care after a fall believing that their headache was not severe enough to indicate a serious injury to the head.

Nausea and vomiting

Head injury

One of the common symptoms of a head injury right after an individual sustained a fall is a headache.

Right after an individual bumps his/her head during a fall, the individual can feel nauseated which indicates a serious injury to the head. In some cases, the nausea can be linked with a concussion. In case the nausea worsens over time or progresses into vomiting, the head injury sustained by the individual could be serious one.

Dizziness

It is important to note that dizziness can be a symptom of various types of head injuries including concussions. With this in mind, it is important to seek medical care once the individual experiences dizziness right after sustaining a bump on the head.

Fractures on the skull

In case of a traumatic fall, there is likelihood that the individual has sustained a skull fracture. There are several indications that a skull fracture occurred which include bruising around the eyes and bleeding from the ear canals or nose.

By consulting a doctor, the nerves that control the eye movements, hearing, facial muscles, sight and swallowing can be evaluated to help determine if there is indeed a skull fracture.

Seizures

Seizures are usually linked with a head injury that involves a break or damage on the skull. The common causes of seizures right after a head injury was sustained include the breaking off of a skull fragment or falling on an object that pierces through the skull. Once these scenarios occur, the individual will suffer from seizures for the rest of his/her life.

Loss of memory

In any head injury, the individual will not remember what occurred before, during and right after the event. In most cases, the individual could not remember those events, even after treatment for the injury was given. Nevertheless, if the injury is not severe, the individual will recover their ability to remember. Even among those with amnesia, the memory of the individual usually returns after some time.

Loss of consciousness

In case the individual becomes unconscious after a fall, the head injury that was sustained could be a serious one. It is important to bring the individual to the emergency department at the nearest hospital so that medical care can be provided right away.
