What are the indications of a severe concussion?

A concussion occurs once the head strikes an object or moving item that impacts the head. This will momentarily disrupt the normal functioning of the brain. Engaging in contact sports, vehicular accidents or falls are the prevalent causes of a concussion. Take note that the injury can affect the judgment, memory and speech of the individual. Additionally, it also affects the coordination and balance of the individual.

Once an individual sustains a concussion, it causes a temporary cessation in the functioning of the reticular activating system. It is important to note that the reticular activating system is responsible for controlling wakefulness or the arousal center in the brain stem. The individual may or may not suffer from loss of consciousness. When it comes to this injury, it does not require therapeutic intervention but some take months to completely recover. What is post-concussion syndrome?

In some individuals who sustained a concussion, they experience a late symptom called as post-concussion syndrome. Those who sustained mild to moderate brain injury can experience some of the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. Take note that these symptoms can last for days up to years.

The symptoms that can indicate the development of post-concussion syndrome include difficulty in concentrating, thinking as well as recalling events. The personality changes include becoming angry or anxious without apparent reason. In some individuals, they will have sudden difficulties when sleeping. There is also lack of interest in activities that the individual previously enjoys. Dizziness, headaches or unsteadiness will occur, thus making standing or walking difficult. In most cases, family members and close friends are the first to notice these changes before the individual is aware of them.

Diagnosing and treating a severe case

Once an individual sustains a head injury, the doctor requires a CT scan to check if there is bruising or bleeding in the brain. In case there is no bleeding or bruising, the individual is monitored for the development of symptoms. Some can go home for observation while others need to be hospitalized.

Medications for pain can be given for comfort. The individual must be encouraged to rest in order to recover. Take note that the symptoms and their frequency tend to vary from one individual to another, thus the doctor will treat the individual based on the symptoms.
