A concussion is simply damage to the brain due to a blow or strike to the head. This injury can cause brief confusion or disorientation, memory loss or loss of consciousness. A concussion is quite common in sports.
What is the cause?
A concussion occurs if a strike to the face or head jars the brain. The impact causes jarring, shaking, swelling, stretching or tearing of the brain tissues and soft nerve fibers that results to alterations in the brain chemicals.
The sports in which is a concussion is likely to occur include gymnastics, football, soccer, wrestling and ice hockey. Nevertheless, the injury can occur in any activity or sport in which an individual can end up struck on the head.
What are the signs?
The usual indications of a concussion include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of consciousness
- Memory loss
- Sleepiness or difficulty falling asleep
- Issues with thinking
- Poor coordination
- Blurry vision
- Balance loss
- Light sensitivity
- Delayed reaction time
- Emotional signs such as irritability, mood swings or depression
These signs might be present for several days, weeks or even longer after the injury.
Management of a concussion
A vital part of treatment is to recognize and manage the injury early. Remember that getting enough rest is the treatment for this injury. It is also suggested to limit activities that require concentration and thinking until the symptoms settled.
The headache can be managed with a pain medication while nausea can be treated with prescribed medications. In addition, bland foods and clear liquids are also beneficial.
