AED saves a teen hockey player

A 13-year old hockey player was saved by an AED. The teen is recovering in a healthcare facility after his pulse stopped during a hockey game and a defibrillator helped bring back his pulse.

Saving a life

Ali Khaleghi collapsed at a hockey game at Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre in North York. He was only on the ice for a few minutes playing for the North York Rangers AAA team and just blocked a shot a few seconds before.

The increasing availability of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) is the key to improving the chances of survival.

Arena operator Doug Jamieson ran onto the ice to help the collapsed player. He worked with an off-duty firefighter and a nurse to bring the teen back to life. They felt for a pulse and started CPR after discovering that the boy had no vital signs. Someone ran to get the arena’s automated external defibrillator (AED) and the trio delivered a shock to the player.

Khaleghi is now recovering in a healthcare facility and resumed breathing on his own.

Easy access to AEDs
