ATMs are one of the suitable locations for installing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to help cardiac arrest victims.
Availability of AEDs
Coffee shops and automated bank machines are ideal locations for installing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to help cardiac arrest victims.
Cardiac arrest causes the heart to stop abruptly due to an electrical issue and considered as a medical emergency. Prompt response to restart the heart using a defibrillator can mean a difference between life and death. Easy access of bystanders to an automated external defibrillator (AED) is vital.
Based on the research conducted, it included the top suitable locations to place AEDs. This device will provide bystanders with audio and visual instructions on delivering a shock to restart the heart before the arrival of the paramedics. Some of these locations include Starbucks, Tim Hortons, ATMs of large banks, Green P public parking lots and Subway sandwich shops.
High risk of death from cardiac arrest
There are thousands of cases of cardiac arrest yearly where majority occur in public places or at home.
In the study, ATMs are often standalone or outdoors and often available 24/7. The ATMs are universally recognizable, thus if AEDs are paired with ATMs, it would be highly beneficial. The study aims on getting AEDs in the right locations to make them more accessible when needed during emergencies.
AED training
The timely use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) can help improve the chances of survival during cardiac emergencies. It is easy to use the device and if you want to be prepared, you can enroll in a first aid course.
